Traveling to Europe: What You Need to Know About the New ETIAS System

Are you planning a trip to the UK or a European destination in 2025? If so, there’s an important update you need to be aware of: the new ETIAS (European Travel Information and Authorization System), which is set to launch in mid-2025.

What Is ETIAS?
ETIAS is a new travel authorization required for visitors from visa-exempt countries, including the U.S., to enter 30 European countries. This is NOT a visa but a pre-travel authorization similar to the ESTA required for the U.S.

The goal of ETIAS is to improve security across Europe by screening travelers before they arrive. Once approved, ETIAS will allow multiple short stays of up to 90 days within a 180-day period and will be valid for three years or until your passport expires.

Does ETIAS Apply to the UK?
No. The UK is not part of ETIAS because it is no longer in the European Union. However, if you plan to visit both the UK and Europe on the same trip, you must apply for ETIAS before entering any participating European country.

How to Apply for ETIAS
Applying for ETIAS is quick and easy. Here’s what you need to do:

Visit the official ETIAS website (expected to launch in 2025).
Fill out the online application—you’ll need a valid passport, email address, and a debit or credit card for the €7 fee.
Receive approval via email, usually within minutes or up to 96 hours if additional review is needed.
Present your ETIAS authorization when entering any of the 30 European countries.
What to Expect When Traveling to the UK & Europe
For the UK: U.S. travelers can still enter visa-free for up to 6 months for tourism. You only need a valid passport.
For Europe: Starting in 2025, you must have an approved ETIAS before your trip.
Border Entry: Expect enhanced security screenings when traveling between the UK and European countries, especially at airports and train stations like the Eurostar.
