What You Need to Know About Global Entry in 2025

How to Apply — and Get It Free
The application fee is $120 for five years, but many travel credit cards like Amex Platinum or Chase Sapphire Reserve (these are the cards I have) offer a full reimbursement every 4–5 years. You can even use this benefit to pay for a family member or friend’s application if you already have yours. I have done this for other family members.
Scheduling the Interview
Once conditionally approved, most applicants must schedule an in-person interview. Here’s how to get an appointment:

First Mondays: Appointment slots open monthly at 9 a.m. local time.

Enrollment on Arrival: Complete your interview at the airport after returning from an international trip.

Enrollment on Departure: Available at IAD and MIA for travelers leaving the U.S.
What to Expect at the Interview
Bring:

A valid passport or permanent resident card

Proof of residency (driver’s license, utility bill, etc.)
You’ll be asked about your identity and travel history, and your fingerprints and photo will be collected. The process takes about 10–15 minutes.
After Approval
You’ll receive a Known Traveler Number (KTN) and Global Entry card within 7–10 days. Enter your KTN number when booking flights to enjoy TSA PreCheck automatically. This will be referenced on your boarding pass.
Note: You don’t need the physical card to use Global Entry kiosks, but it’s smart to carry it — especially when returning by land or cruise.
Using Global Entry at the Airport
Most kiosks now use facial recognition for entry. Some locations support paperless processing, and there's even a mobile app that lets you skip the kiosk and verify your identity via selfie at nearly 80 airports.
What About Families?

Global Entry for Non-U.S. Citizens
Citizens from 21 countries (including the UK, Germany, and South Korea) can apply via international agreements. Canadians can apply through NEXUS, which also includes TSA PreCheck and Global Entry.
Renewal Tips
Membership lasts five years, expiring on your birthday. You can renew online before expiration — and often skip a second interview. Due to high demand, it’s wise to start the renewal process at least six months in advance.

You can’t upgrade from TSA PreCheck to Global Entry — you’ll need to apply separately.
